The History of Ferns
Ferns have been around since the dawn of time. They first appeared in fossil records 360 million years ago. During the Carboniferous Period (the Age of Ferns), they were a dominant part of vegetation and have graced the planet ever since. Today, they grow in many different habitats throughout the world.
Ferns have a history of use for medicinal purposes including combatting rheumatism, lung afflictions, and stomach issues. Native peoples called on different varieties to address different physical issues. Some fern stages are edible, like fiddleheads (emerging fronds) of the Lady Fern. They contain various vitamins and minerals like potassium, as well as essential fatty acids. Some fiddleheads can be carcinogenic, i.e. Braken Fern.
Ferns can also remove pollutants from the air and remediate contaminated soils. Representations of ferns are often used as a decorative design element. Their gentle draping form conveys grace and calm in the garden.
