Tips for Growing Peonies from Longfield Gardens
- Be Patient, It's Worth It! Peonies often take some time to mature, but once they do, they can thrive for a century or more! After peonies start producing flowers, you'll get more and more blossoms each year.
- Don't Plant the Roots Too Deeply. Some of the roots of a peony are actually underground stems, so be sure not to plant the roots too deep.
- Encourage Good Air Circulation. In order to avoid disease and infection, always plant peonies in full sun, away from crowded spaces like next to buildings or fences, or near other plants.
- Know When and How to Cut the Flowers. In the first few years, it is best to only cut a few stems. When the plant has matured, you can cut as many as you like. Use sharp shears or scissors to cut 6 inches of the stem in addition to the flower.
- Support the Stems. Larger and double peonies are often too heavy for their stems and require extra support, such as a peony ring or wood or steel stakes.
- What About Those Ants? Peony buds attract ants, however, these ants do not harm the peonies! It is best to ignore them, but if you want to bring the plants inside, you can just shake the ants off of the flowers.
